SANTA ANA, Calif. – On September 3, 2026, a multi-agency operation led by the Orange County Sheriff’s Department resulted in the dismantling of a significant catalytic converter theft ring. The coordinated effort involved serving multiple search warrants across Orange County and Los Angeles County, leading to five arrests and the recovery of a substantial amount of stolen property and currency.
The operation culminated a three-month investigation spearheaded by the Sheriff’s Department’s North Investigations Unit and North Directed Enforcement Team. This extensive inquiry successfully connected a series of catalytic converter thefts in various cities throughout north Orange County to a sophisticated criminal organization. Authorities described the group as involved in the entire process of catalytic converter thefts, including their dismantling, transfer, and subsequent purchasing.
During the execution of the search warrants, approximately 2,400 suspected stolen catalytic converters were discovered. These recovered parts alone are estimated to be valued at approximately $4.3 million, representing a significant loss for victims and a substantial financial blow to the criminal enterprise. In addition to the converters, law enforcement found several large shipping boxes containing precious metals, two unregistered firearms, and more than $105,000 in U.S. currency. The recovery of these items underscores the scale and profitability of the illicit activities.
Assisting the Orange County Sheriff’s Department in this complex investigation were several key agencies. These included the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Major Crimes Bureau, Los Angeles County Fire/Haz-Mat Investigations, California Department of Motor Vehicles Investigations, California Department of Insurance Investigations, and the City of Irvine Code Enforcement. The Orange County District Attorney’s office also played a vital role throughout the investigation, which officials noted was the result of a “tremendous amount of time, dedication, tenacity, and professionalism” from all involved.
Five individuals were taken into custody in connection with the investigation. Those arrested were identified as Jorge Alberto Delgadillo, 35, of Maywood; Julio Moreno Reyes, 40, of Los Angeles; Gilberto Valdovino, 27, of Los Angeles; Brayan CruzDeLeon, 20, of Los Angeles; and Hugo SaenzMarin, 24, of Compton. All five individuals were booked on suspicion of grand theft and conspiracy to commit a crime.
The Sheriff’s Department also issued a reminder to residents regarding vehicle security. Homeowners and vehicle owners are encouraged to stay vigilant, consider parking in well-lit areas or inside a garage, and invest in anti-theft devices. The department also suggested finding service providers to etch identifying information onto car parts as a deterrent against theft. These measures are highlighted as practical steps to protect property and reduce vulnerability to such crimes.
