ANAHEIM — The Anaheim Ducks organization announced on Tuesday its plan to retire the number of former captain Ryan Getzlaf, a significant recognition for the player who spent his entire 17-year NHL career with the team.
The ceremony is scheduled for January 30, celebrating Getzlaf, who officially retired in April 2022. Ducks owners Henry and Susan Samueli made the announcement, highlighting Getzlaf's enduring legacy within the franchise.
Getzlaf's career with the Ducks was marked by numerous achievements and records. He stands as the top scorer in Ducks history, accumulating 1,019 points over a franchise-record 1,157 games. Additionally, he leads the team in career assists and is its top playoff scorer. His leadership was particularly notable, serving as the Ducks' captain for his final 12 seasons, the longest tenure in team history.
Beyond his team records, Getzlaf was recognized as one of hockey's premier playmaking centers. He was a key member of the Ducks' 2007 Stanley Cup championship team and earned Olympic gold medals for Canada in both 2010 and 2014. In 2014, he was also the runner-up for the Hart Trophy, awarded to the NHL's Most Valuable Player.
In a statement, the Samuelis emphasized Getzlaf's profound impact. They noted that "Ryan Getzlaf’s impact on the Ducks will be felt for generations to come," further adding that while his game and scoring records are significant, his leadership, championship mindset, and contributions to the community would be remembered most. His jersey will join those of other legacy players, Teemu Selanne, Paul Kariya, and Scott Niedermayer, hanging at the Honda Center. Getzlaf’s No. 15 will be only the fourth number retired by the Ducks, following Selanne’s No. 8, Kariya’s No. 9, and Niedermayer’s No. 27.
Reacting to the honor, Getzlaf expressed his gratitude. In his own statement, he shared, “My family and I are so grateful to the Samuelis and the Ducks organization for this incredible honor.” He credited his success to his teammates, coaches, and support staff, eagerly anticipating the celebration with fans in January.
The number retirement ceremony on January 30 will coincide with the Ducks' game against the Nashville Predators. Preceding this event, on January 28, the team will host a 20-year reunion celebration for the 2007 Stanley Cup championship team, held during a game against the Chicago Blackhawks. Getzlaf and Corey Perry, both first-round draft picks by Anaheim in 2003, were integral to that championship squad. Perry, at 41, is still active in the NHL and is preparing for his 22nd season with the Los Angeles Kings.
