Anaheim is proceeding with a significant update to one of its iconic public spaces, Boysen Park, which includes the construction of a new skate park. This project, which began with a recent groundbreaking, aims to reinforce the city's established place in the history of skateboarding. Construction for the new half-acre skate park is currently underway, strategically located along State College Boulevard and Vermont Avenue, just north of the Angel Stadium of Anaheim, making it an accessible addition for local residents.
Boysen Park holds a special place in the community as one of Anaheim's most iconic parks. Many residents fondly know it as "airplane park," a name derived from its signature play structure: a restored 1950s-era Navy Cougar jet that served in the Korean War. A formal event on Monday marked the official start of construction for the skate park. Attendees included Anaheim Mayor Ashleigh Aitken; District 4 Council Member Norma Campos Kurtz, whose district encompasses the area around Boysen Park; other members of Anaheim's City Council; and U.S. Rep Lou Correa. The new skate park is anticipated to be ready for public use later this year.
Upon completion, this facility will become Anaheim's ninth skate park, expanding the network of recreational options already available in parks across the city. Mayor Ashleigh Aitken stated that "Anaheim has an incredible place in skateboarding history," further emphasizing that no other Orange County city boasts as many skate parks. Mayor Aitken added that the Boysen skate park represents "another investment in Anaheim’s neighborhoods and the families who call them home," providing a dedicated space for skateboarders of all skill levels to ride, practice, and connect.
The financial commitment for this project amounts to $1.6 million. The completed skate park is designed to feature a variety of amenities, including a pool-style bowl, a quarter pipe, a mini half-pipe, rails, and ledges. Additionally, the design incorporates dedicated seating and shade structures for visitor comfort. San Diego's Schmidt Design Group provided the design for the skate park, while Moalej Builders Inc. of Newport Beach is undertaking the construction.
This new skate park represents the initial segment of a more extensive renovation planned for Boysen Park. The overall project is being strategically executed in phases, a deliberate approach to ensure that the majority of the park remains accessible and operational for residents throughout the upgrade period.
